5 Things You Should Know About Arya Starr

It is very rare for a new artiste to trends online because of the release of their debut project, but this is possible when you are signed by a good record label like Mavin records owned by Don Jazzy. Ayra Starr went from being relatively unknown to instant fame with the release of her self titled project ‘Ayra Starr’. Here is 5 things that you should know about her:

1. Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe professionally known as Ayra Starr is a 19-year-old artist based in Lagos State, Nigeria. Her sound can be classified as Afropop, Afrobeats, and/or R&B. Like her label mate, Rema, she is from Edo State in Southern Nigeria but grew up in between Lagos and Cotonou, Benin.

2. It can be said that her career started in 2019 as she would post videos of herself on social media, singing a mix of songs from other artists and songs she wrote by herself. Her videos got thousands of views and engagement.

3. It is suspected that Don Jazzy found her through Instagram. He signed her to Mavin records in 2020 and she released her first project, ‘Ayra Starr,’ in January 2021.

Don Jazzy said this about her on his instagram when he announced her

“Last year I met the most incredible 18-year-old girl, her name is Ayra Starr. Through her lyrics guided by her soulful voice, I am able to see the world from a teenager’s point of view. Ayra is not just an amazing artist, she is an all-round superstar. It’s been a fantastic experience working behind the scene for over a year and we at Mavin Global are super proud to present to the world today #AyraStarr.”

4. Music talent runs in her family. Her younger brother, Dami or Milarofficial (on social media), is into music as well. He has not put any record out yet, but he is a writer. He is credited as a writer on his sister’s EP and is also credited as a writer on Jonny Drille’s single, “Mystery Girl”.

5. She has lost her father from whom she draws a lot of inspiration for her music through his death. In her own words she wrote about him on her Instagram:

“My Dad was a go-getter, he lived his life the way he wanted, created his own rules and was unapologetic about it, he was the real O.G.

If I have learnt anything during this past week is that there is no template to live, live your life the way you want because at the end of the day you go alone.

On Sunday I knew I had a choice to stay home all through and cry about how unfair his death was or change the situation into an inspiration like my father always did, so I chose the latter.”

5. The video for the first song off her EP; Away, has been dropped and was premiered on Clash Magazine.
